Choosing where to live is not as simple as we might want it to be. Life stage and family often play a major role in your place of residence. Health and wealth are two more reasons to contemplate before packing up. What about your other half?

Have you ever thought about living in a country other than the one you were born in? For me, the answer to this question was easy.

At my life stage, it just made sense to try something new. Little did I know what was ahead when I made the decision to stay in Ukraine just a few months. That was fourteen years ago.

At the beginning of 2006, the thought of living in another country had never entered my mind. That was before I had met my sweetheart online on December 15, 2006. That day changed our lives in many ways.

Meeting Larisa in person for the first time months later, made me think about life in her country. What would that be like? How would that work? Did it make sense to live in Ukraine for a while?

So many choices and important decisions to make. Meeting online is one thing, meeting face to face is another. Getting to know each other created an entirely new dimension in our relationship. That was then.

Today, we couldn’t be happier. We live in Ukraine because we feel comfortable with our lifestyle. Family here is important for us too. Financially, we can live just about anywhere. Looking at all factors, for us, it just makes good sense to live in Ukraine. We look at it more like our home base.

Travel across Ukraine and neighboring countries is easy and generally inexpensive. That is, if you know what you are doing.

Searching for the best travel deals takes time and research. It’s well worth the investment. Eastern Europe has so much to offer. Today, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

More stories all about Ukraine

You might think Ukraine is an unfriendly place to reside. Not true. In fact, Ukrainians are well known for their hospitality and friendly spirit. We have many real friends here.

Larisa and I are two extremely lucky people to be able to do what we do. Combining two cultures is a daily affair.

Although I spend a great deal of my day writing, we often walk and shop together. We have several hobbies too. Baking and cooking tasty meals together can be part of our daily ritual. Sharing meals at our favorite eatery is something we look forward to as well.

Have you ever considered living in another country? No matter where you live, there can be benefits to life elsewhere. Often, changes in your home town can influence your expat decision. Employment, family, health, climate, politics can seemingly change over time or overnight.

Giving minimal thought to life in another country doesn’t have to be a permanent decision. Americans can live in Ukraine for six months of the year in three month intervals. That’s without the need for a visa of any type. If the company you work for has an office in Ukraine, it’s also possible to obtain a work visa. That can be for one year or longer. Whether you stay in Ukraine for the long or short term, you will surely have fun!

Expats know the value of living in another country other than the United States. Bill and Larisa Green share valuable insights along with the benefits!
